Those are starter boxes. They are an alternate to a pullstarter or ez-start, and are preferred by racers because you can knock some weight off your car, and the starting assembly doesn't drag on your crankshaft(10% power loss w/ pull or ez start, i'm not sure).

They are starter boxes and are used to start your nitro vehicle. When you use one you can get rid of your ez-start or pull start, which drops the weight of your car or truck.

how they work is... there is a spinning part that you press against the flywheel and it cranks the engine over. you still need a glow ignitor to the the plug hot though.
